A new free app has been launched to provide advice and support for people with lung cancer and their families.

The app includes a patient information handbook, information on US-based lung cancer support services, a glossary of lung cancer terms, and information for patients and their caregivers to use during diagnosis, care and treatment.

The app also helps track data and connects patients to clinical trials and genomic testing.

The app has been launched by the non-profit Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) in association with the Open Health Network (OHN), a San Francisco-based start-up that specializes in health-related info tech.

OHN founder Tatyana Kanzaveli described the collaboration as “the first step in unlocking a wealth of self-reporting data that’s missing from current medical research and disease management efforts”.

“Information is our best weapon in the fight for lung cancer patients,” she said.

ALCF founder Bonnie J. Addario described the cancer journey as “scary, overwhelming, confusing.”

She said there wasn’t a lot of information dedicated to lung cancer compared to other forms of cancer.

“We created this app to close the gaps of information because we believe the more knowledge patients have, the better equipped they and their family will be to deal with lung cancer and become survivors,” she said.

“No two patients are alike, nor should they be treated the same. The Lung Cancer Foundation app helps patients navigate their individual disease and empowers patients to determine what treatment options are best for their specific cancer mutation.”

Lung Cancer Foundation will be available on iTunes and Google Play.
