Keeping Up with Kassy Perry

Kassy Perry, President/CEO of Perry Communications, Inc., says the riding lessons she has provided her daughters Morgan and Kaitlin brought an unexpected reward last week: Kaitlin was granted a near full-ride scholarship to Texas Christian University to join its NCAA Division 1 Equestrian Team. Perry, herself an equestrian, says training for horse competitions has taught her, and her girls, many lessons over the years about the merits of teamwork, hard work, calculating risks and taking responsibility for something other than oneself (namely, the horse). Training and competing also stress the need to stay focused in the moment. Perry, who has ridden competitively since her childhood, learned the importance of focus on Memorial Day weekend 2005 when she lost focus for a split second while training on her horse. The horse threw her and Perry broke a vertabrae in her back. Before going into surgery, she was told she might not walk again, but a successful operation and rehab brought Perry back to walking -and of course – riding competitively again with her daughters. As cliché as it sounds, the mishap was one of the best things that ever happened to her, she says. “You focus on the positive things and you realize how important the moment is,” says Perry. Perry is now facing a new challenge come fall – the empty nest. Kaitlin will be a freshman at TCU and her older daughter Morgan will be finishing her undergraduate degree in Agribusiness at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
